First Steps

First Steps is a parenting support and education program provided to all families of newborns at the Habersham Medical Center. Parents are visited right in the hospital shortly after delivery and given a “Parent Packet” of helpful information and resources. Because a new baby requires lifestyle adjustments, First Steps is a safety net for everyone. Even experienced parents need to make changes when a new child is welcomed into the family. During the hospital visit by our staff and interns, families are carefully assessed for needs and concerns in order to refer them to community resources and services. Mothers are also offered emotional support, encouragement and a listening ear during this new chapter in their lives.

This project was supported in part by the Georgia Department of Human Services, Division of Family and Children Services and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Community Based Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CFDA 93.590).
